Herbalist caused Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone – Health officials

A healer claiming to have special powers to cure Ebola Virus Disease has been identified as the cause of the virus’ deadly outbreak leaving hundreds of people dead in Sierra Leone.

According to the country’s health officials, the outbreak should not have spread from Guinea to the country except for the herbalist in the remote

eastern border village of Sokoma.

“She was claiming to have powers to heal Ebola. Cases from Guinea were crossing into Sierra Leone for treatment,” Mohamed Vandi, the top medical official in the hard-hit district of Kenema, told Agence France-Presse.

“She got infected and died. During her funeral, women around the other towns got infected.” The herbalist’s mourners fanned out across the rolling hills of the Kissi tribal chiefdoms, starting a chain

reaction of infections, deaths, funerals and more infections.

A worrying outbreak turned into a major epidemic when the virus finally hit Kenema city on June 17. An ethnically-diverse, Krio-speaking city of 190,000,

Kenema already has the highest incidence of Lassa fever, another viral haemorrhagic disease, in the world.

Last week Saturday, the founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, T.B. Joshua, one of Nigeria’s controversial and richest preachers according to Forbes, announced that he sent more than 4,000

bottles of his powerful anointing water, which users claimed had worked many miracles, to help victims of the deadly EVD in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

“Prophet T.B. Joshua announced in The SCOAN Saturday Prayer Line that 4,000 bottles of New Anointing Water have arrived in the nation of Sierra Leone, alongside $50,000 in humanitarian

aid, to support the ongoing crises there caused by the disease of Ebola,” stated a post on the Facebook page of TB Joshua Ministries.

“The Anointing Water was sent in a private jet that cost an additional $50,000 to charter, making $100,000 given by Prophet T.B. Joshua and the

Emmanuel TV Partners to reach out to the troubled nation,” it added.

Joshua claimed on the church’s website that God was powerfully expressing himself through the “Anointing Water” he distributed.

“By using the Anointing Water, you are symbolically setting yourself apart for Jesus Christ’s special attention as you pray in faith. I mean, you are positioned for mercy, favour, healing, deliverance,

blessing, prosperity and fruitfulness,” Joshua said.

The virus is highly infectious through exposure to bodily fluids, and its early rapid spread in West Africa was attributed in part to relatives touching

victims during traditional funeral rites

Odemwingie under English FA investigation

Super Eagles striker Osaze Odemwingie is under investigation of the Football Association (England FA) over issues around his transfer away from West Brom to Cardiff City and then Stoke City.

English tabloid The Daily Maill revealed that the transfer of the 33-year old Nigerian striker in September 2013 in a deal worth around N544.8m (£2.25m) is now heading for an FA tribunal.

Odemwingie was represented by Rob Segal in the now contentious deal and it is understood the two men are now in a legal dispute over the payment of agents’ fees, with the Nigeria striker’s

subsequent move to Stoke also part of that dispute.

West Brom who have since moved on and even acquired the services of two Nigerian strikers after the exit of Odemwingie have not yet commented on the ongoing investigation but there is absolutely no suggestion of any wrong-

doing on the part of Albion.

Liverpool agrees £16m Balotelli deal with Milan

Reports from Italy suggest that Liverpool have reached an agreement with AC Milan to sign Italian striker, Mario Balotelli.

Officials of Liverpool traveled to Milan on

Wednesday to hold talks with the club concerning the transfer of the striker.

Reds boss, Brendan Rodgers is keen to add more fire power to the squad following the departure of Luis Suarez this summer and he has identified the fiery forward as an ideal recruitment.

Rodgers had initially denied interest in the player but appeared to have a change of mind after his effort to sign Monaco striker, Radamel Falcao proved unproductive.

Reports also claimed that the Anfield side initially tried to sign Balotelli on loan but that proposal was turned down by Milan prompting Liverpool to make a £16 million bid for the player which the Italian club has since accepted.

Balotelli has been in good goal scoring form for Milan since joining the side, the 24-year-old found the net 30 times in 53 games for the Serie A giants. He also scored the same amount of goals for Manchester City during his time with the

EPL champions.

Oshoala dedicate MVP award to team mates

Star of the FIFA U20 Women World Cup semi-final match between Nigeria and Korea DPR Asisat Oshoala has dedicated her Most Valuable Player award to her team mates and her coaches.

The award was well deserved as individual brilliance saw her score four and provide assists for two as the Falconets beat North Korea 6-2 to book a ticket to the final where they would face

Germany.

Oshoala has now scored seven goals, half of the 15 the Falconets have scored in Canada. Speaking on her performance, Oshoala, who has bagged three MVP awards said the goals just came.

“I never expected to score this much, the chances came and I just utilise them. We had a good fighting spirit because we had told ourselves that nobody was going to take our glory from us,” she

told Falconets media officer Elizabeth Karr.

“We made that promised, so winning the semi-finals means victory at the finals, am glad I got the most valuable player for the third time. I dedicate it to my coaches and team mates, she continued.

The Falconets will play Germany in what looks to be a repeat of the 2010 final at the Montreal stadium on Sunday.
